Ind AS 1 Presentation of Financial Statements: formula sheet

Full chapter guide

Key formulas

Objective of Ind AS 1
Presentation basis for GPFS → comparability with own prior periods and with other entities
Quote both comparisons. Ind AS 1 sets overall requirements, structure and minimum content, not recognition or measurement.
General purpose financial statements
GPFS = statements meant for users who cannot require reports tailored to their specific needs
Applies to standalone and consolidated statements. Special reports to a lender or regulator are not GPFS.
Material
Information is material if omitting, misstating or obscuring it could reasonably be expected to influence decisions that primary users make on the basis of the financial statements
Materiality is judged for the specific reporting entity. It depends on nature, size or both. Obscuring includes burying it among immaterial detail.
Other comprehensive income (OCI)
OCI = items of income and expense that are not recognised in profit or loss, as required or permitted by other Ind AS. The definition includes reclassification adjustments as a component.
OCI comprises components such as revaluation surplus on PPE, remeasurements of defined benefit plans and FVOCI equity gains. Reclassification adjustments are amounts recycled out of OCI to profit or loss in the period, having been recognised in OCI in the current or earlier periods. Some components are later reclassified to profit or loss, where an Ind AS requires it. Revaluation surplus, remeasurements of defined benefit plans and FVOCI equity gains are never reclassified to profit or loss, though the cumulative amount may be transferred within equity.
Total comprehensive income
Total comprehensive income = Profit or loss + Other comprehensive income
It is the change in equity during a period from transactions other than those with owners acting as owners.
Impracticable
Applying a requirement is impracticable when the entity cannot apply it after making every reasonable effort to do so
This is the definition in Ind AS 1. For the criteria on retrospective application, refer to Ind AS 8.
Complete set of financial statements
Balance sheet + Statement of profit and loss (with OCI) + Statement of changes in equity + Statement of cash flows + Notes; comparatives required in addition
Ind AS 1 allows only a single statement of profit and loss including OCI. Titles may differ, but the five components must be present.
Third balance sheet trigger
Third balance sheet (start of preceding period) required if: retrospective policy change / restatement / reclassification AND material effect
Related notes to the third balance sheet are not required.
Departure from Ind AS
Ind AS 1 omits the IAS 1 para 19 override and requires compliance with all applicable Ind AS
There is no 'true and fair override' of the kind found in IAS 1. An entity cannot depart from an Ind AS requirement on the ground of fair presentation.
Going concern look-forward period
Assess at least 12 months from the end of the reporting period
This is a minimum, not a limit.
Offsetting rule
No offsetting unless required or permitted by an Ind AS
Gains and losses on disposal of non-current assets may be shown net, as may similar groups of transactions that are not material individually.
Current asset tests (any one)
Operating cycle OR held for trading OR realisable within 12 months OR unrestricted cash/cash equivalent
If none is met, the asset is non-current. Restricted cash for at least 12 months is non-current.
Current liability tests (any one)
Settled in operating cycle OR held for trading OR due within 12 months OR no right to defer for 12 months at reporting date
If none is met, the liability is non-current.
Default operating cycle
Operating cycle not clearly identifiable → 12 months
Use the entity's actual cycle when it is identifiable.
Right to defer settlement
Classification depends on the right existing at the end of the reporting period
Management intention and post-period events do not change it. Covenants to be complied with on or before the reporting date matter; covenants to be complied with only after that date do not affect classification, but may need disclosure.
Deferred tax
Deferred tax assets/liabilities → always non-current
Never show them as current.
Counterparty settlement option
A counterparty's option to settle by issuing the entity's equity instruments does not affect classification if the option is recognised separately as an equity instrument under Ind AS 32
For example, the equity component of a compound instrument. If the option is a liability, the liability is classified as current.
Minimum balance sheet line items
At minimum: PPE; investment property; intangible assets; financial assets; investments accounted for using the equity method; biological assets; inventories; trade and other receivables; cash and cash equivalents; total of assets classified as held for sale and assets included in disposal groups classified as held for sale; trade and other payables; provisions; financial liabilities; current tax assets; current tax liabilities; deferred tax assets; deferred tax liabilities; liabilities included in disposal groups classified as held for sale; non-controlling interest presented within equity; issued capital and reserves attributable to owners of the parent
These are the minimum face items. Schedule III (Division II) gives the detailed format for Ind AS companies.
Total comprehensive income
Total comprehensive income = Profit or loss for the period + Other comprehensive income (net of tax)
Attribute separately to owners of the parent and non-controlling interests.
Profit or loss for the period
Profit or loss = Total income − Total expenses (including tax expense)
Items not in OCI by Ind AS requirement go here.
OCI classification
OCI = Items that will not be reclassified + Items that will be reclassified to profit or loss
Show tax either net against each item or by a note; show the total of each group.
Minimum face items
Revenue; gains or losses from derecognition of financial assets measured at amortised cost; impairment losses (including reversals) under Ind AS 109; finance costs; share of profit or loss of associates and JVs (equity method); any gain or loss on reclassification of a financial asset from amortised cost to FVTPL; any cumulative gain or loss moved from equity to profit or loss on reclassification of a financial asset from FVOCI to FVTPL; tax expense; post-tax result of discontinued operations; profit or loss; each OCI class; share of OCI of associates and JVs; total comprehensive income
Also show profit or loss and total comprehensive income attributable to NCI and owners. Other Ind AS and Schedule III may require further line items.
Expense analysis
By nature: depreciation, employee benefits, purchases. By function: cost of sales, distribution, administration
Under Ind AS 1 the function method needs extra disclosure of depreciation, amortisation and employee benefits expense. Schedule III (Division II) prescribes the nature-wise format for companies.
Extraordinary items
Presentation of extraordinary items = Prohibited
Material items are disclosed separately by nature and amount, but not labelled extraordinary.
SOCIE reconciliation for each equity component
Closing balance = Opening balance ± Ind AS 8 adjustments + Profit or loss + OCI ± Owner transactions ± Transfers between reserves
Opening balance is shown before and after restatement when a retrospective change or error correction applies. Dividends paid and share issues are owner transactions.
Total comprehensive income
Total comprehensive income = Profit or loss for the year + Other comprehensive income
Attributable to owners of the parent and to non-controlling interests in consolidated statements.
Judgement vs estimation disclosure
Judgements: how a policy is applied. Estimation uncertainty: risk of material adjustment to carrying amounts within the next financial year
For estimation uncertainty, give the nature of the item and its carrying amount at the reporting date.
Capital disclosure checklist
Objectives, policies and processes + quantitative data on capital + external requirements + compliance + consequences of non-compliance
Applies whatever the entity regards as capital.
Dividend disclosure
Dividends declared after the reporting period but before approval are not recognised as a liability; disclose amount and per-share amount in the notes
Dividends declared during the year to owners appear in SOCIE as a distribution.

Quick revision

  • A complete set of financial statements includes the balance sheet, statement of profit and loss, SOCE, statement of cash flows and notes, plus comparative information.
  • Fair presentation means a faithful representation; compliance with Ind AS is presumed to achieve it.
  • Management assesses the entity's ability to continue as a going concern. It prepares the financial statements on that basis unless it intends to liquidate or cease trading, or has no realistic alternative but to do so. Material uncertainties that may cast significant doubt on going concern must be disclosed.
  • Accrual basis applies to all statements except cash flow information.
  • Each material class of similar items is presented separately; dissimilar items are not aggregated unless immaterial.
  • Assets and liabilities are not offset unless an Ind AS requires or permits it.
  • A liability is current if ANY one of the four criteria is met: (a) the entity expects to settle it in its normal operating cycle; (b) it holds it primarily for trading; (c) it is due to be settled within twelve months after the reporting period; or (d) it does not have the right at the end of the reporting period to defer settlement for at least twelve months. Under (d), classification depends on whether that right exists at the reporting date, not on management's expectation of whether it will exercise the right.
  • Classification depends on the position at the reporting date, not on events afterwards.
  • Items of OCI are shown separately as those that will be reclassified to profit or loss and those that will not.
  • Total comprehensive income is profit or loss plus OCI.
  • Extraordinary items are not presented in the statement of profit and loss or in the notes.
  • The SOCE reconciles opening and closing balance of each component of equity.

Common mistakes

  • Treating a lender's special report as GPFS Fix: Ask if users can demand tailored information. If they can, it is not GPFS for that user.
  • Defining material only by size or a percentage Fix: Ind AS 1 gives no numerical threshold. Judge by nature, size or both, for the specific entity, and include obscuring.
  • Treating the statement of cash flows as optional or the notes as outside the complete set. Fix: Learn the five components plus comparatives. Notes and the cash flow statement are part of the complete set, and comparatives are required in addition.
  • Writing that two statements (profit and loss, then a separate OCI statement) are allowed under Ind AS 1. Fix: Under Ind AS 1 as notified, present one statement of profit and loss with OCI. Use this in IAS 1 difference questions.
  • Treating a loan as non-current because the lender waived the covenant breach after the reporting date. Fix: If the breach existed at the reporting date and, as a result, the lender could demand repayment within 12 months, classify as current. A waiver after the date is a non-adjusting event under Ind AS 10, so disclose it. Only a grace period of at least 12 months agreed on or before the reporting date would keep the loan non-current.
  • Classifying a loan as non-current because management intends to refinance it. Fix: Only a right to roll over that exists at the reporting date, under the existing loan facility, supports non-current. A refinancing agreed after the date does not.
  • Showing remeasurement of a defined benefit plan in profit or loss. Fix: Remeasurements go to OCI and are not reclassified later. Only current service cost and net interest go to profit or loss.
  • Recycling revaluation surplus to profit or loss on disposal. Fix: Revaluation surplus is never reclassified to profit or loss. It may be transferred within equity, to retained earnings.
  • Treating dividend declared after the reporting date as a liability at year end. Fix: If declared after the reporting period, do not recognise it. Disclose it in the notes. Recognise it in the period it is declared.
  • Showing profit for the year only, not total comprehensive income, in the SOCIE. Fix: Always show profit or loss and each OCI item as separate movements.

Exam tips

  • Write definitions in your own words but keep the anchor phrases: primary users, influence decisions, every reasonable effort.
  • In case MCQs, watch for options that fix a percentage as the test of materiality. Ind AS 1 gives none.
  • For written answers, always link at least one fact from the case to the definition before concluding.
  • Remember scope carve-outs: Ind AS 34 interim statements, and adaptation for not-for-profit entities.
  • Separate presentation (Ind AS 1) from recognition and measurement (other Ind AS) when a question mixes them.
  • Write the rule first in one line, then apply it. Examiners award marks for each step of provision, facts and conclusion.
  • In the difference-from-IAS 1 questions, mention the single statement of profit and loss under Ind AS 1 and the omission of the IAS 1 para 19 override.
  • For offsetting cases, always ask: does an Ind AS permit it? If not, show gross.
