Key formulas
- What CAS does
- CAS = uniform principles for measuring, assigning and presenting cost
- Issued by ICMAI. Applies to cost records and cost statements, not to the conduct of the audit.

- Uniformity + Consistency + Comparability + Reliability
- Use these four words as the skeleton of any 'need and objectives' answer.
- Issuance process
- Topic → Draft → Exposure draft for comments → Review of comments → Approval and issue
- Stated in broad stages. Do not add stage names or timelines you are not sure of.

Quick revision
- Cost Accounting Standards are issued by ICMAI to bring uniformity to cost measurement, assignment and presentation.
- GACAP stands for Generally Accepted Cost Accounting Principles.
- Standards reduce differences in how organisations treat the same cost item.
- Consistent treatment makes cost data comparable across periods and entities.
- A cost auditor uses accepted principles as the yardstick when reviewing cost records.
- In an application question, name the cost item first, then the principle, then the treatment.
- Always give a reason with the treatment; a bare answer loses marks.
- Use the exact ICMAI wording for standard titles when you quote them.
- Section A can ask purpose and definition questions; read all four options before choosing.
- There is no negative marking, so attempt every MCQ.
Common mistakes
- Mixing up Cost Accounting Standards with Standards on Cost Auditing Fix: CAS covers cost measurement. SCA covers audit conduct, such as planning, documentation and reporting. Ask whether the topic is about the cost figure or the audit work.
- Writing that CAS replaces Ind AS or Accounting Standards Fix: CAS governs cost records and cost statements for internal and regulatory cost purposes. Financial statements follow Ind AS or the applicable accounting framework.
Exam tips
- For MCQs, anchor on the keyword in the stem and map it to the standard number. Learn the three blocks of eight.
- In theory answers, always say who uses the standard and what it prevents, such as differing treatments of the same cost.
- Always separate CAS, SCA and GACAP in one line. Examiners like clear distinctions.
- In case questions, name the cost item, name the standard, then state the effect on cost records. Do not stop at the number.
- Do not add statistics or dates for the issuance process. A short, correct flow earns full marks.
