Facts Discovered After the Date of the Auditor's Report (SA 560)
Updated 5 October 2026 · Fact-checked
These are facts that become known to the auditor after the report date but before the financial statements are issued, and which would have changed the report had they been known. The auditor discusses them with management and those charged with governance, and extends procedures. If the statements are amended, the auditor issues a new or amended report, using dual dating or a later date.
Understand Facts Discovered After the Date of the Auditor's Report
Start with the timeline. The auditor signs the report on one date. The financial statements are then issued to members, regulators or other users on a later date. Between these two dates, the auditor has no duty to perform procedures or make enquiries on the financial statements. Management is responsible for telling the auditor about any facts that come up in this gap.
Suppose a fact does come to light in this period. It must be a fact that existed at the date of the auditor's report and that, had the auditor known it then, might have caused the report to be modified. The auditor cannot ignore it. The financial statements are not yet in the hands of users, so there is still time to fix them.
The auditor first discusses the matter with management and, where appropriate, those charged with governance. The auditor then decides whether the financial statements need amendment, and asks management how it intends to deal with the matter in the statements.
If management amends the financial statements, the auditor carries out the audit procedures needed on the amendment. The auditor also extends the review of subsequent events up to the date of the new report and provides a new or amended auditor's report on the amended statements. The new report must not be dated earlier than the date of approval of the amended financial statements.
There is a choice about dating. The auditor may date the new report with a later date, or may use dual dating. Under dual dating, the amended report keeps the original date for the earlier opinion and adds a second date for the amendment, for example: "28 May 2027, except for Note X, which is dated 10 June 2027." This shows that the auditor's procedures on the other matters stop at the earlier date, and only the amended note is covered up to the later date.
If management does not amend the financial statements when the auditor believes it should, and the statements have not been issued, the auditor modifies the opinion. The reporting follows the same logic as SA 705 on modified opinions.
If management does not amend and the statements are about to be issued, or have been issued, without the amendment, the auditor acts to prevent reliance on the report. The auditor notifies management and those charged with governance not to issue the financial statements to third parties before the amendments are made. The auditor may also seek legal advice on the options available. If the statements are issued anyway, the auditor takes appropriate action to prevent reliance on the report.
Key rules to remember
- Condition for the SA 560 procedure
- Fact becomes known after report date + before FS are issued + existed at report date + might have changed the report
- All four elements must be present. A fact that arose after the report date (a new event) is judged differently from a fact that already existed.
- Auditor's first action
- Discuss with management and, where appropriate, those charged with governance → decide if FS need amendment → ask how management will deal with it
- Write the actions in this order in answers.
- If FS are amended
- Extend audit procedures to the new report date + issue new or amended report
- The new report cannot be dated earlier than the date of approval of the amended FS.
- Dating options
- Option 1: new report with later date; Option 2: dual dating (original date, except for Note X dated later)
- Under dual dating, the later date covers only the amended matter. Subsequent events procedures for other matters stop at the original date.
- If management does not amend and FS not yet issued
- Modify opinion (qualified or adverse as appropriate); if FS are issued despite this, take appropriate action to prevent reliance on the report
- Modification depends on materiality and pervasiveness of the matter. Keep the two situations separate: modify before issue; prevent reliance only if the statements are issued anyway.
- Responsibility in the gap
- No duty to perform procedures or make enquiries on FS between report date and issue
- The duty to act arises only when a fact comes to the auditor's knowledge.
How to solve Facts Discovered After the Date of the Auditor's Report questions
Use the same sequence for any question on facts discovered after the report date but before issue of the financial statements.
- 1Fix the timeline from the case: report date, date the fact became known, and whether the financial statements have been issued. If they are already issued, this is a different situation, and the facts-after-issue provisions apply instead.
- 2Test the fact: did it exist at the report date, and would it have changed the report had it been known? Say so in one line.
- 3State the first action: discuss with management and, where appropriate, those charged with governance, and consider whether the financial statements need amendment.
- 4If management amends: say that the auditor performs the necessary procedures on the amendment, extends the subsequent events review to the new report date, and issues a new or amended report.
- 5Deal with the date: give the later date option and the dual dating option. Write the dual date wording using the case dates.
- 6If management refuses or does not act: say the auditor modifies the opinion if the statements have not been issued. If the statements are issued despite this, the auditor takes action to prevent reliance on the report. Consider seeking legal advice.
- 7Finish with the conclusion on the opinion type and the dates, tied to the figures in the case.
Quickest way: Timeline, Test, Talk, Treat, Date
When to use it: Use this for case-scenario MCQs and for short written answers where time is tight.
- Timeline: mark the report date, the discovery date and the issue date. If discovery is before issue, SA 560 applies as discussed here.
- Test: ask whether the fact existed at the report date and is material enough to change the report.
- Talk: the first step is always to discuss with management and those charged with governance.
- Treat: if management amends, do procedures on the amendment and give a new or amended report. If not, modify the opinion.
- Date: pick a later date or dual date. Never date the new report before approval of the amended statements.
Common mistakes in Facts Discovered After the Date of the Auditor's Report
Saying the auditor must keep checking for new events between the report date and the issue date.
Students mix this with the period up to the report date, where active procedures are required.
Fix: Write that after the report date the auditor has no obligation to perform procedures or enquiries on the financial statements. The duty arises only when a relevant fact becomes known.
Jumping straight to modifying the opinion without speaking to management.
Students focus on the outcome rather than the sequence of SA 560.
Fix: Always write the discussion with management and those charged with governance first. The modification comes only if management does not act.
Dating the new report earlier than the date of approval of the amended financial statements.
Students keep the original date out of habit.
Fix: A new report must be dated no earlier than the approval of the amended statements. To keep the original date for unchanged matters, use dual dating.
Applying the later date to the whole report under dual dating.
Students do not see that dual dating limits the later date to the amendment.
Fix: Write the wording as 'original date, except for Note X, which is dated later date'. Explain that procedures on other matters stop at the original date.
Confusing this topic with facts that become known after the financial statements are issued.
Both sit under SA 560, and the titles look alike.
Fix: Check the issue date in the case. If the statements are not yet issued, use the approach in this page. If they are issued, the post-issue provisions apply.
Treating a new event after the report date as a fact that existed at the report date.
Students read every post-report item as a correction trigger.
Fix: Ask whether the condition existed at the report date. A fact that existed may require amendment. A purely new event is dealt with by disclosure considerations rather than a restatement.
Worked examples
Example 1
Case: The auditor of Meru Ltd signed the report on 20 May 2027. The financial statements were to be issued on 15 June 2027. On 2 June 2027 the auditor learns that a major debtor of ₹80 lakh, shown as good at year end, had been declared insolvent on 10 April 2027 and management knew this. The debtor balance is material. Management agrees to amend the financial statements by providing for the full amount, and the board approves the amended statements on 5 June 2027. Explain what the auditor should do and how the report should be dated.
Show the solution
- Timeline: the report date is 20 May 2027, the discovery is 2 June 2027, and the statements are not yet issued (planned for 15 June 2027). The facts-after-report-date, before-issue provisions apply.
- Test the fact: the insolvency was on 10 April 2027, so the condition existed at the report date. The balance is material. Had the auditor known, the report would likely have been modified.
- First action: discuss the matter with management and, where appropriate, those charged with governance, and consider whether the financial statements need amendment.
- Management agrees to provide ₹80 lakh in full. The auditor carries out the audit procedures needed on the amendment, such as checking the insolvency evidence and the revised provision.
- The auditor extends the subsequent events review up to the date of the new report and obtains an updated written representation as appropriate.
- Dating: the new report cannot be dated before 5 June 2027, the date of approval of the amended statements. The auditor may either date the new report with a later date (on or after 5 June 2027), or use dual dating, such as '20 May 2027, except for the affected note or the provision, which is dated 5 June 2027'.
Answer: The auditor discusses with management, performs procedures on the ₹80 lakh provision, extends the subsequent events review, and issues a new or amended report. The report is dated no earlier than 5 June 2027, or is dual dated as '20 May 2027, except for the affected note or the provision, which is dated 5 June 2027'.
Example 2
Case: The auditor of Kailash Ltd signed an unmodified report on 12 August 2027. On 25 August 2027, before the statements were issued, the auditor learns that a pending lawsuit for ₹3 crore, which existed at year end, was not disclosed or provided for. Management declines to amend the financial statements. The matter is material and pervasive in effect. The statements have not been issued. What should the auditor do?
Show the solution
- Timeline: the report date is 12 August 2027, the discovery is 25 August 2027, and the statements are not yet issued.
- Test the fact: the lawsuit existed at year end and at the report date, and it is material. Not providing for or disclosing it is a misstatement. It would have changed the report if it had been known then.
- First action: discuss the matter with management and, where appropriate, those charged with governance, and ask how management intends to deal with it in the statements.
- Management declines to amend. SA 560 requires the auditor to modify the opinion, and the modified opinion is given as per SA 705. The auditor explains the basis for the modification in the report.
- Choose the form of modification: the misstatement is material and pervasive in effect, so an adverse opinion follows. If the effect were material but not pervasive, a qualified opinion would be the proper form.
- Dating: management has not amended the statements, so there are no amended statements whose approval fixes the date. The auditor completes the additional procedures on the lawsuit and signs the modified report. The report is dated on the day those procedures are completed and the report is signed. It is not dated by reference to 25 August 2027, the day the auditor learned of the matter. For example, if the procedures are completed on 30 August 2027, the modified report is dated 30 August 2027. The auditor must not issue an unmodified report.
- Communicate the modified opinion and its basis to those charged with governance. Do not let the unmodified report of 12 August 2027 be relied upon.
Answer: The auditor discusses the matter with management and those charged with governance. Since management refuses to amend and the statements have not been issued, the auditor modifies the opinion as per SA 705. Because the unprovided and undisclosed ₹3 crore lawsuit is material and pervasive in effect, the opinion is adverse. The modified report is dated on the day the auditor completes the additional procedures and signs it (for example 30 August 2027 if procedures end then), not by reference to the day the matter was learned. The auditor also communicates with those charged with governance.
Exam tips
- Always read the issue date in the case first. This single date decides whether the pre-issue provisions or the post-issue provisions apply.
- Write the action sequence in the order of SA 560: discuss with management, decide on amendment, then extend procedures and report. Marks follow the sequence.
- When the question asks for dating, give both options: a later date and dual dating. Then write the dual date wording using the dates in the case.
- In MCQs, watch for the trap options that say the auditor must keep making enquiries after the report date, or that the new report may carry the original date for the whole report.
- If the statements are not yet issued, modify the opinion. Only if they have been issued, take action to prevent reliance.

Facts Discovered After the Date of the Auditor's Report: frequently asked questions
Does the auditor have to carry out procedures after the report date?
No. After the date of the auditor's report, the auditor has no obligation to perform any procedures or make enquiries on the financial statements. The duty to act arises only when a relevant fact becomes known to the auditor before the statements are issued.
What is dual dating of the auditor's report?
Dual dating means the report carries the original date for the audit as a whole and a later date for a specific amended matter. The wording is like '20 May 2027, except for Note X, which is dated 5 June 2027'. It shows that procedures on other matters stop at the earlier date.
When can the auditor choose a later date instead of dual dating?
The auditor may give the new report a later date that is not earlier than the date of approval of the amended financial statements. Then the subsequent events review runs up to that later date for the whole report. The auditor chooses based on the extent of the amendment and the procedures performed.
What if management does not amend the financial statements?
The auditor discusses the matter first. If management still does not amend and the statements have not been issued, the auditor modifies the opinion as appropriate. If the statements are issued despite this, the auditor takes action to prevent reliance on the report.
