Ind AS 101: Presentation, Disclosures and Reconciliations

Updated 5 October 2026 · Fact-checked

Ind AS 101 requires your first Ind AS financial statements to show at least three balance sheets and two of every other statement, explain how transition changed reported position and performance, and reconcile previous GAAP to Ind AS: equity at the transition date and latest previous-GAAP year-end, and total comprehensive income for the latest previous-GAAP year.

Understand Presentation, Disclosures and Reconciliations

When a company moves to Ind AS for the first time, users must be able to see what changed and why. Ind AS 101 does this through three things: comparative information, an explanation of the transition, and reconciliations from previous GAAP.

Comparative information. Ind AS 101 requires at least one year of comparative information. The first Ind AS financial statements must include at least three balance sheets, two statements of profit and loss, two statements of cash flows and two statements of changes in equity, with related notes. The third balance sheet is the opening Ind AS balance sheet at the date of transition (the start of the earliest comparative period). Ind AS 101 requires one year of comparatives, and the opening Ind AS balance sheet at the date of transition is also presented, so the first Ind AS financial statements contain three balance sheets.

Explanation of transition. You must explain how the move from previous GAAP to Ind AS affected the reported balance sheet, financial performance and cash flows. If you also show comparative information or historical summaries prepared under previous GAAP, label them clearly as not prepared under Ind AS and describe the main adjustments that would make them comply. You need not quantify those adjustments.

Reconciliations. These are the core of the topic. You give (a) a reconciliation of equity under previous GAAP to equity under Ind AS at the date of transition and at the end of the latest period presented in the most recent annual financial statements under previous GAAP, and (b) a reconciliation of total comprehensive income for that latest previous-GAAP period. Start from total comprehensive income under previous GAAP if it was reported. If it was not, start from the profit or loss reported under previous GAAP. The reconciliations must be detailed enough for users to understand each material adjustment. Any correction of an error made under previous GAAP must be shown separately from changes in accounting policy.

Related points. If you recognised or reversed an impairment loss while preparing the opening Ind AS balance sheet, you give the Ind AS 36 disclosures as if you had recognised it in the first Ind AS period. If you presented a cash flow statement under previous GAAP, you explain material adjustments to it. If interim reports under Ind AS 34 fall within the first Ind AS year, extra reconciliations apply to them. If you change accounting policies or use of exemptions during the first Ind AS year, you explain the change and update the reconciliations.

Key rules to remember

Minimum statements in first Ind AS financial statements
3 balance sheets + 2 statements of profit and loss + 2 cash flow statements + 2 statements of changes in equity + notes
The three balance sheets are the reporting date, the end of the comparative year and the opening balance sheet at the date of transition.
Equity reconciliation
Equity under previous GAAP ± Ind AS adjustments = Equity under Ind AS
Required at two dates: the date of transition and the end of the latest period in the most recent previous-GAAP annual financial statements.
Total comprehensive income reconciliation
Total comprehensive income under previous GAAP (if reported; otherwise profit or loss under previous GAAP) ± Ind AS adjustments (including OCI items and related tax) = Total comprehensive income under Ind AS
Required for the latest period in the most recent previous-GAAP annual financial statements. Start from total comprehensive income under previous GAAP if one was reported; otherwise start from profit or loss.
Dates in a typical case
Date of transition = start of the earliest comparative period; first Ind AS reporting date = end of the first Ind AS period
Example: first Ind AS year ending 31 March 2027, so date of transition is 1 April 2025 and the latest previous-GAAP year is 2025-26.
Interim reports within the first Ind AS year
Each Ind AS 34 interim report: reconcile equity and total comprehensive income of the comparable interim period (if one was presented under previous GAAP). First such report: also include the annual reconciliations.
The annual reconciliations may be given in the report or cross-referenced to another published document.
Labelling rule
Non-Ind AS comparatives or historical summaries = label as not Ind AS compliant + describe main adjustments
Quantification of those adjustments is not required.

How to solve Presentation, Disclosures and Reconciliations questions

Use this sequence for any question on presentation, disclosure or reconciliation in the first Ind AS financial statements.

  1. 1Fix the dates. Identify the first Ind AS reporting date, the comparative year-end and the date of transition (start of the comparative year).
  2. 2List the statements required: three balance sheets and two each of profit and loss, cash flows and changes in equity, plus notes.
  3. 3Identify which reconciliations are asked for: equity at the date of transition, equity at the end of the latest previous-GAAP year, and total comprehensive income for that year.
  4. 4List each adjustment from the facts and classify it as affecting equity (opening or closing), profit or loss, OCI, or only presentation. Include the deferred tax on each item.
  5. 5Build the reconciliation in columns: previous GAAP figure, each adjustment, then the Ind AS figure. Start the income reconciliation from total comprehensive income under previous GAAP if it was reported, otherwise from previous-GAAP profit or loss, and show OCI items separately.
  6. 6Check that the totals cross-foot. Opening equity adjustment plus the year's total comprehensive income adjustment must explain the closing equity adjustment, apart from items taken directly to equity.
  7. 7Add the narrative: labelling of non-Ind AS comparatives, separate identification of errors, cash flow adjustments, impairment disclosures and interim report requirements if the facts mention them.
  8. 8State the conclusion in provision, facts, conclusion form so the marker sees the rule applied to the case.

Quickest way: Date-table and adjustment-grid method

When to use it: Use it for numerical reconciliation questions and for case MCQs asking what must be presented or reconciled.

  1. Write three dates in a line: transition date, comparative year-end, first reporting date. This gives you the three balance sheets at once.
  2. Mark the two equity reconciliation dates (transition date and comparative year-end) and the one income reconciliation period (the comparative year).
  3. Draw a grid with one row per adjustment and columns for equity at transition, profit, OCI and equity at comparative year-end.
  4. Tax-effect every adjustment in its own row, because tax follows the item. Tax on an OCI item goes to OCI.
  5. Sum the columns and check that the opening adjustment plus the profit and OCI adjustments equals the closing adjustment.

Common mistakes in Presentation, Disclosures and Reconciliations

  • Presenting only two balance sheets in the first Ind AS financial statements.

You remember the usual presentation of a current-year and a comparative-year balance sheet.

Fix: Ind AS 101 requires at least one year of comparative information, and the opening Ind AS balance sheet at the date of transition is also presented. This gives three balance sheets, and two of each other statement.

  • Reconciling profit only and ignoring total comprehensive income.

Previous GAAP usually reports only profit, so the income reconciliation looks like a profit reconciliation.

Fix: Reconcile to total comprehensive income under Ind AS. Start from total comprehensive income under previous GAAP if reported, otherwise from previous-GAAP profit or loss. Then show items that Ind AS takes to OCI, such as remeasurements of defined benefit plans or FVOCI gains.

  • Giving equity reconciliations for every period shown or at the wrong dates.

    You treat all comparatives alike.

Fix: Equity is reconciled at the date of transition and at the end of the latest period in the most recent previous-GAAP annual statements. Total comprehensive income is reconciled for that latest period only. Interim reports have their own additional requirements.

  • Applying Ind AS 8 to the changes made on adopting Ind AS.

The adjustments look like changes in accounting policy.

Fix: Ind AS 8 does not apply to the changes on first-time adoption. Show them in the reconciliations. Separately identify any correction of an error made under previous GAAP.

  • Leaving previous-GAAP comparatives or summaries unlabelled.

You assume the whole report is deemed to be under Ind AS.

Fix: Label non-Ind AS information prominently as not prepared under Ind AS and describe the main adjustments needed to comply. Quantifying them is not required.

  • Forgetting deferred tax, the cash flow explanation or the impairment disclosure.

You concentrate on the main recognition and measurement adjustments.

Fix: Tax-effect each adjustment. Explain material adjustments to the cash flow statement if one was presented under previous GAAP. Give Ind AS 36 disclosures for impairment recognised or reversed at the date of transition.

Worked examples

Example 1

Alpha Ltd adopts Ind AS for the first time. Its first Ind AS financial statements are for the year ended 31 March 2027. Until 2025-26 it published annual financial statements under previous GAAP and quarterly results. During 2026-27 it also publishes an Ind AS 34 interim report for the half-year ended 30 September 2026, and it presented a half-yearly report for the half-year ended 30 September 2025 under previous GAAP. State (a) the statements required, (b) the reconciliations required in the annual statements, and (c) the additional reconciliations in the half-year report.

Show the solution
  1. Dates: first Ind AS reporting date is 31 March 2027, the comparative year-end is 31 March 2026, and the date of transition is 1 April 2025.
  2. Statements required: balance sheets at 31 March 2027, 31 March 2026 and 1 April 2025 (three), plus two statements each of profit and loss, cash flows and changes in equity (2026-27 and 2025-26), with notes.
  3. Annual reconciliations: equity under previous GAAP to Ind AS at 1 April 2025 and at 31 March 2026, and total comprehensive income for 2025-26, starting from previous-GAAP total comprehensive income if reported, otherwise from previous-GAAP profit or loss. They must be detailed enough to explain each material adjustment, and any error corrections are shown separately.
  4. Narrative: the effect of transition on the balance sheet, performance and cash flows is explained. Any previous-GAAP summaries are labelled as not Ind AS compliant, with a description of the main adjustments.
  5. Half-year report at 30 September 2026: because a comparable interim report was presented for the half-year ended 30 September 2025, it must reconcile equity at 30 September 2025 and total comprehensive income for that comparable period under previous GAAP and Ind AS.
  6. As this is the first interim report under Ind AS 34 in the first Ind AS year, it must also include the annual reconciliations above (equity at 1 April 2025 and 31 March 2026, and total comprehensive income for 2025-26), or cross-refer to another published document that contains them.

Answer: Three balance sheets (31 March 2027, 31 March 2026, 1 April 2025) and two of every other statement. Annual reconciliations: equity at 1 April 2025 and 31 March 2026, and total comprehensive income for 2025-26. The half-year report adds equity and total comprehensive income reconciliations for the half-year ended 30 September 2025, and, as the first Ind AS interim report, also includes the annual reconciliations or a cross-reference to them.

Example 2

Beta Ltd's first Ind AS year ends 31 March 2027. The date of transition is 1 April 2025. For 2025-26 its previous-GAAP profit was ₹120 lakh, and no total comprehensive income was reported under previous GAAP. Under Ind AS: (i) investments carried at cost are measured at FVTPL, giving a gain of ₹15 lakh in 2025-26; (ii) a loss allowance on trade receivables reduces profit by ₹8 lakh; (iii) actuarial loss of ₹10 lakh on gratuity, charged to profit under previous GAAP, is taken to OCI. Deferred tax is at 25% on each pre-tax adjustment. Prepare the reconciliation of total comprehensive income for 2025-26.

Show the solution
  1. Start from previous-GAAP profit: ₹120 lakh. No total comprehensive income was reported under previous GAAP, so profit is the starting point. The actuarial loss of ₹10 lakh is already charged in this profit.
  2. Item (i): FVTPL gain adds ₹15 lakh to profit. Deferred tax is 25% × 15 = ₹3.75 lakh, which reduces profit. Net effect on profit: +₹11.25 lakh.
  3. Item (ii): loss allowance reduces profit by ₹8 lakh. Deferred tax asset of 25% × 8 = ₹2 lakh increases profit. Net effect on profit: −₹6 lakh.
  4. Item (iii): the actuarial loss is removed from profit, so profit rises by ₹10 lakh. Deferred tax on this is 25% × 10 = ₹2.5 lakh, which reduces profit. Net effect on profit: +₹7.5 lakh. The same loss now appears in OCI as −₹10 lakh, with tax of ₹2.5 lakh credited in OCI, so OCI falls by ₹7.5 lakh net.
  5. Item (iii) only moves the loss from profit to OCI. Profit rises by ₹7.5 lakh net and OCI falls by ₹7.5 lakh net, so the effect on total comprehensive income is nil.
  6. Net profit adjustments: 15 − 8 + 10 = 17 before tax; tax = 3.75 − 2 + 2.5 = 4.25. Net after tax = 12.75 (11.25 − 6 + 7.5).
  7. Profit under Ind AS: 120 + 12.75 = ₹132.75 lakh.
  8. OCI under Ind AS: −10 + 2.5 = −₹7.5 lakh (net of tax).
  9. Total comprehensive income under Ind AS: 132.75 − 7.5 = ₹125.25 lakh.
  10. Check: the TCI adjustment comes only from items (i) and (ii): (15 − 8) × 75% = ₹5.25 lakh. Previous-GAAP profit 120 + 5.25 = ₹125.25 lakh.

Answer: Total comprehensive income under Ind AS for 2025-26 is ₹125.25 lakh: profit ₹132.75 lakh (which includes +₹7.5 lakh net from item iii) less OCI loss of ₹7.5 lakh. It is reconciled from previous-GAAP profit of ₹120 lakh with a net TCI adjustment of +₹5.25 lakh, since item (iii) only reclassifies between profit and OCI.

Exam tips

  • In theory answers, quote the three required reconciliations (equity at two dates, total comprehensive income for one period) and state the dates for the given case. This earns marks quickly.
  • In numerical questions, show the adjustment grid with tax on each row. Markers award marks for each adjustment and for the cross-check.
  • Watch for case facts about interim reports, impairment at the date of transition, or cash flows. These point to the extra disclosure requirements.
  • Use the phrase 'reconcile to total comprehensive income, starting from previous-GAAP total comprehensive income if reported, otherwise profit or loss' rather than 'reconcile profit'. It shows you know the requirement.
  • Do not apply Ind AS 8 to adoption changes. If asked, say it does not apply and the effects go in the reconciliations.

Practice questions from Ind AS 101 First-time Adoption of Ind AS

Presentation, Disclosures and Reconciliations: frequently asked questions

How many balance sheets must the first Ind AS financial statements include?

At least three: the reporting date, the end of the comparative year, and the opening Ind AS balance sheet at the date of transition. You also present at least two statements each of profit and loss, cash flows and changes in equity.

Which reconciliations does Ind AS 101 require in the first Ind AS financial statements?

You reconcile equity under previous GAAP to Ind AS at the date of transition and at the end of the latest period in the most recent previous-GAAP annual financial statements. You also reconcile total comprehensive income for that latest period. If previous GAAP did not report total comprehensive income, start from profit or loss.

What must I do with comparative information prepared under previous GAAP?

Label it clearly as not prepared under Ind AS. Describe the main adjustments that would make it comply with Ind AS. You do not have to quantify those adjustments.

What extra reconciliations apply to interim reports in the first Ind AS year?

Each Ind AS 34 interim report reconciles equity and total comprehensive income for the comparable interim period if an interim report for it was presented under previous GAAP. The first interim report also includes the annual reconciliations or a cross-reference to them. Changes in policies or exemptions during the year must be explained and the reconciliations updated.
