Fundamentals of Business Mathematics and Statistics (FBMS) for CMA Foundation

Paper 3, Fundamentals of Business Mathematics and Statistics (FBMS), is a 100-mark objective paper of 50 MCQs with no negative marking. It has two sections: Section A Business Mathematics and Section B Business Statistics. You score by learning formulas, practising numerical questions daily, and using quick elimination to save time.

Paper 3 tests whether you can apply school-level mathematics and basic statistics to business situations. It has 50 multiple choice questions of 2 marks each, with four options. You must answer all of them in one hour, and there is no negative marking. Paper 3 is written in a 2-hour session together with Paper 4.

The paper has two sections: Section A Business Mathematics and Section B Business Statistics. Do not treat statistics as the lighter part. The mathematics section includes Ratios, Variations and Proportions, Time Value of Money, AP and GP, Time and Distance, Set Theory, Indices and Logarithms, Permutations and Combinations, Quadratic Equations, and Calculus. The statistics section includes Statistical Representation of Data, Central Tendency and Dispersion, Correlation and Regression, Probability, and Index Numbers and Time Series. Most questions are numerical and need a formula and a short calculation.

Students who practise regularly usually find this paper scoring, because every answer is exact and there is no subjective marking. Students who only read and do not solve usually lose marks. Weak calculation speed and forgotten formulas are the usual causes. Remember that you must pass each paper with at least 40% and also reach 50% in aggregate. A strong Paper 3 helps you reach the 50% aggregate, but every paper must still reach 40% on its own.

How to prepare Fundamentals of Business Mathematics and Statistics

Treat this paper as a skill, not a reading subject. You learn it by solving. Plan so that every chapter gets concept time, then practice time, then revision.

  1. Split the syllabus into two lists: Section A mathematics and Section B statistics. Study one chapter at a time and finish its practice before moving on.
  2. Start with chapters you find easy, such as Ratios, Indices and Logarithms, and Statistical Representation of Data. Early confidence helps you stay consistent.
  3. For each chapter, write a one-page formula sheet in your own words. Include the condition under which each formula applies, such as when to use simple or compound interest, or AP or GP.
  4. Solve at least 15 to 20 MCQs per chapter after learning it. Do the first few with full working, then practise shortcuts such as substituting the options back into the question.
  5. Give extra time to chapters that need many steps: Time Value of Money, Permutations and Combinations, Calculus, Correlation and Regression, and Probability. Practise them in short sessions across several days.
  6. Learn the standard values and tables you will need, like squares, cubes, and common logarithm values. This cuts calculation time in the exam.
  7. Revise using your formula sheets every week. Re-solve questions you got wrong and note the reason for each error.
  8. In the last weeks, take full 50-question mock tests in one hour. Review each test by chapter to see where marks leak, then fix those chapters first.

Time management in the exam

  • You have 60 minutes for 50 questions, so aim for about 70 seconds per question on average. Short formula questions should take less, which leaves time for longer ones.
  • Do a first pass and answer every question you can solve quickly. Mark long calculations and return to them later.
  • For questions that look long, try the options. Put an option back into the equation or condition and see if it works. This is often faster than solving.
  • Use elimination early. Check whether an answer must be positive, an integer, or within a known range such as 0 to 1 for probability or -1 to +1 for correlation.
  • There is no negative marking, so answer every question. In the last two minutes, fill any blank with your best guess on the OMR sheet.
  • Keep a few minutes at the end to check that the OMR bubbles match the answers you chose. Shade carefully, because a shifted row costs many marks.

Mistakes that cost marks in Fundamentals of Business Mathematics and Statistics

  • Memorising formulas without knowing when to use them

Fix: Next to every formula on your sheet, write one line on when it applies and one small example.

  • Skipping practice and only reading the chapters

Fix: Set a fixed number of solved MCQs per chapter. Count a chapter as done only when you have finished them.

  • Making calculation slips in simple arithmetic

Fix: Practise by hand under time limits. Write each step neatly, and recheck signs and powers before choosing an option.

  • Confusing similar terms and formulas

Fix: Make a comparison note for each confusing pair, with the key difference and one example for each.

  • Ignoring the statistics chapters because they seem theoretical

Fix: Give statistics equal practice. Learn the formulas for dispersion, correlation, regression and index numbers, and solve numerical questions on them.

  • Leaving questions blank or spending too long on one

Fix: Move on after about two minutes, mark the question, and come back. Since there is no negative marking, always fill in an answer.

Fundamentals of Business Mathematics and Statistics: frequently asked questions

How many questions are there in CMA Foundation Business Mathematics and Statistics?

There are 50 multiple choice questions of 2 marks each, for a total of 100 marks. Each has four options and all must be answered in one hour. You mark answers on an offline OMR sheet.

Is there negative marking in this paper?

No, there is no negative marking at CMA Foundation. You should answer every question, even if you have to guess a few. Use elimination first to improve your chance.

Which chapters should I start with?

Begin with chapters you find easy, such as Ratios, Indices and Logarithms, and Statistical Representation of Data. Then move to steps-heavy ones like Time Value of Money, Permutations and Combinations, and Probability. Practise each chapter before starting the next.

What marks do I need to pass Paper 3?

You need at least 40% in each paper and 50% in aggregate across all four papers. Exemption and carry forward of marks are not available at Foundation. So you must clear the minimum in every paper in the same attempt.

Do I need a calculator for this paper?

Do not plan on using one. Prepare to calculate by hand and learn common values such as squares and key logarithms. Check the latest ICMAI exam instructions before the exam for the rules on permitted items.
