Investor Grievance Redressal and SCORES for NISM Equity Derivatives
Updated 11 October 2026 · Fact-checked
Investor grievance redressal is the escalation route for a complaint against a broker or other intermediary. You first complain to the intermediary. If unresolved, you can use SEBI SCORES or the exchange investor service centre. Smart ODR is an online platform for conciliation and arbitration after the grievance route. Match each forum to its stage.
Understand Investor Grievance Redressal and SCORES
A grievance is a complaint by an investor against a stock broker, clearing member or other regulated entity. Examples are an unauthorised trade, a wrong contract note, delayed payout or poor service in F&O. The system works in layers, and the exam tests which layer comes when.
The first layer is the intermediary itself. Brokers must have a grievance redressal process and a designated contact. You should complain there first, in writing, and keep the proof.
SEBI SCORES is SEBI's online complaint portal and app. You register, file a complaint against a listed company or registered intermediary, and the complaint is sent to that entity. It must reply with an action taken report, and you can track status online. SCORES is a complaint-handling and follow-up system. It does not decide the dispute like a court.
Stock exchanges also run investor service centres and grievance cells. You can complain to the exchange against its trading members. The exchange takes up the matter with the member and may refer it to its investor grievance or arbitration mechanism, as its rules provide.
Smart ODR is SEBI's Online Dispute Resolution platform. It is for disputes in the securities market that remain unresolved after the earlier grievance stage. It offers online conciliation and, if that fails, online arbitration by institutions on the platform. Think of it as: complaint first, dispute resolution next. Check exact time limits, fees and eligibility in your NISM workbook edition, as these are updated by SEBI circulars.
Key formulas to remember
- Escalation order
- Intermediary → SCORES / exchange investor service centre → Smart ODR (conciliation → arbitration)
- Use as the default sequence. Each step is tried when the earlier one does not resolve the matter.
- SCORES
- SCORES = SEBI's online complaint registration and tracking system
- Complaint goes to the entity, which files an action taken report. It is not a court or an arbitrator.
- Smart ODR
- Smart ODR = online conciliation, then online arbitration
- Used for disputes unresolved after the grievance stage.
- Exchange route
- Complaint against a trading member → exchange investor service centre
- The exchange deals with its own members.

Fix: SCORES registers and follows up complaints. Binding outcomes come from arbitration, including through Smart ODR.
Mixing up SCORES and Smart ODR.
Both are online and run under SEBI's framework.
Fix: SCORES is for complaints; Smart ODR is for dispute resolution by conciliation and arbitration.
Going straight to Smart ODR without a prior complaint.
Students think the newest platform replaces the earlier steps.
Fix: Remember the order: complaint first, dispute resolution later.
Saying exchanges have no role in grievances.
Focus on SEBI as the only regulator.
Fix: Exchanges have investor service centres and handle complaints against their trading members.
Quoting time limits and fees from memory.
Circulars change and old notes circulate.
Fix: Use the current workbook figures only. If unsure, choose the option that follows the stage logic.

Show the solution
- The complaint is against a registered intermediary, a broker.
- She has already approached the broker without a satisfactory result.
- The need is online registration and tracking of the complaint.
- That feature belongs to SEBI SCORES.
Answer: File the complaint on SEBI SCORES, which forwards it to the broker for an action taken report. She can also approach the exchange investor service centre.
Example 2
