A company's sales are ₹40 lakh in 2022 and ₹60 lakh in 2023. A pie chart is drawn for each year, with the area of each circle proportional to total sales. If the 2022 circle has radius 4 cm, what is the radius of the 2023 circle?

The radius is 4√1.5 cm, about 4.9 cm. Since the area of each circle is proportional to sales and area depends on the square of the radius, the radius ratio is the square root of 60/40, which is √1.5. Making the radius proportional would wrongly give 6 cm.

  1. A4√1.5 cmCorrect
  2. B6 cm
  3. C4 × 1.5² cm
  4. D4 × 0.5 cm

Explanation

The area of a circle is proportional to r², so r₂²/r₁² = 60/40 = 1.5. Hence r₂ = 4√1.5 cm, about 4.9 cm. Taking radius directly proportional to sales would give 6 cm, which is wrong because area, not radius, represents the value.
