A courier goes 14 km south from a depot, then 7 km west, then 6 km north, and finally 7 km east. How far and in which direction is he from the depot?

He is 8 km south of the depot. The 7 km west and 7 km east movements cancel, and the 14 km south less 6 km north leaves a net 8 km south. Adding the northward leg instead of subtracting gives a wrong answer.

  1. A8 km north
  2. B8 km southCorrect
  3. C20 km south
  4. D6 km south

Explanation

East-west: 7 km west and 7 km east cancel out. North-south: 14 km south and 6 km north give 8 km south. So he is 8 km due south of the depot. Option 20 km south wrongly adds the north leg.
