A man walks 5 km east, then 12 km north, then 5 km west. How far is he from the starting point, and in which direction is he from it?

He is 12 km from the start, towards the north. The eastward 5 km and westward 5 km cancel each other, so only the 12 km northward movement remains as the net displacement. The figure 22 km is just the total path length walked.

  1. A12 km, northCorrect
  2. B22 km, north
  3. C10 km, north-east
  4. D17 km, north-west

Explanation

The 5 km east and 5 km west cancel, leaving a net movement of 12 km north. So displacement is 12 km towards the north. The 22 km figure is the total distance walked, which is not the displacement.
