A market researcher is told to interview 40 men and 60 women outside a shopping centre. She approaches shoppers until each group is filled, choosing whom to approach herself. Which sampling method is this?
This is quota sampling. The researcher must fill fixed numbers of men and women and chooses whom to approach herself, so selection is non-random. Stratified random sampling would instead choose each group's members by random selection from a sampling frame.
- AQuota samplingCorrect
- BStratified random sampling
- CCluster sampling
- DSystematic sampling
Explanation
Quota sampling sets fixed numbers for each category and the interviewer picks respondents until the quotas are met. Stratified random sampling would select within each group using random selection, which is not done here.
