A price index series with base 2014 = 100 gives 125 for 2016, 150 for 2019 and 200 for 2022. The base is shifted to 2016 = 100. What is the sum of the new index numbers for 2019 and 2022?

The sum is 280. After shifting the base to 2016, each old index is divided by 125 and multiplied by 100, giving 120 for 2019 and 160 for 2022, which add up to 280.

  1. A350
  2. B280Correct
  3. C300
  4. D275

Explanation

New 2019 index = 150/125 × 100 = 120. New 2022 index = 200/125 × 100 = 160. Sum = 120 + 160 = 280. The sum 350 is the unshifted total (150 + 200), so it ignores the shift. The sum 300 is not obtainable from the shifted values.
