A producers' association registered the GI 'Kovai Handloom Silk' on 1 April 2015 and the registration has never been renewed. Ravi, a weaver, applied and was registered as an authorised user of that GI on 1 April 2020. For how long does Ravi's registration run, without renewal?

Ravi's registration ends when the GI registration expires on 1 April 2025. An authorised user's registration runs for ten years or until the GI registration expires, whichever is earlier, and the GI's term ends before Ravi's own ten years would finish.

  1. ATen years from 1 April 2020, ending on 1 April 2030
  2. BUntil 1 April 2025, when the GI registration expiresCorrect
  3. CUntil 1 April 2035, which is twenty years from the GI registration
  4. DFive years from 1 April 2020, being half of the standard term

Explanation

An authorised user's registration lasts ten years or until the registered GI expires, whichever is earlier. The GI expires on 1 April 2025 (ten years from 1 April 2015), which is earlier than 1 April 2030. So Ravi's registration ends with the GI's term. Option A ignores the 'whichever is earlier' limit.
