A researcher groups the monthly electricity bills (in ₹) of households into the classes 500–1000, 1000–1500, 1500–2000 and so on, using the exclusive method. A bill of exactly ₹1,500 is placed in which class?
A bill of exactly ₹1,500 goes into the class 1500–2000. Under the exclusive method the upper limit of each class is excluded, so 1,500 is left out of 1000–1500 and counted in the next class, where it is the lower limit.
- A500–1000
- B1000–1500
- C1500–2000Correct
- DIt is counted in both 1000–1500 and 1500–2000
Explanation
In the exclusive method the upper limit of a class is not included in that class. So a value equal to 1,500 is excluded from 1000–1500 and belongs to the next class, 1500–2000. Counting it in both classes would double count the observation, and placing it in 1000–1500 follows the inclusive method.
