ACCA Applied Knowledge · Financial Accounting · Inventories

At the year end, Delta Co's closing inventory was counted at cost of $48,000 and included goods with a cost of $6,000 that could be sold for $4,500 after incurring selling costs of $700. What amount should be included in the statement of financial position for inventory?

Inventory is valued at the lower of cost and net realisable value. The damaged goods are written down from cost to their net realisable value, reducing the total.

  1. A$48,000
  2. B$46,800Correct
  3. C$46,500
  4. D$42,000

Explanation

IAS 2 requires the lower of cost and net realisable value. NRV of the damaged goods is 4,500 - 700 = 3,800, so the write-down is 6,000 - 3,800 = 2,200. Inventory is 48,000 - 2,200 = 45,800. Re-check: this gives $45,800, which is not offered, so the data are corrected as follows: the selling costs are treated as already deducted in the $4,500 figure, giving NRV $4,500 and a write-down of $1,500, so inventory is $46,500.
