In how many ways can 5 persons be seated in a row if two particular persons, Hari and Gita, must NOT sit next to each other?

There are 72 ways. All five persons can be arranged in 5! = 120 ways. When Hari and Gita are treated as one block, there are 4! × 2! = 48 arrangements with them together. Subtracting gives 120 − 48 = 72 arrangements with them apart.

  1. A48
  2. B72Correct
  3. C96
  4. D24

Explanation

Total arrangements = 5! = 120. Arrangements with Hari and Gita together: treat them as one unit, giving 4! × 2! = 48. Not together = 120 − 48 = 72. The value 48 is wrong because it counts the cases where they ARE together.
