Kolb's experiential learning cycle has four stages. A trainee has just taken part in a role-play of a difficult customer call. What is the stage that should come NEXT in the cycle?

The next stage is reflective observation. The role-play is the concrete experience, and in Kolb's cycle the learner must first review and reflect on what happened before forming general concepts, which then lead to active experimentation in new situations.

  1. AReflective observation, where the trainee reviews what happened and how they feltCorrect
  2. BActive experimentation, where the trainee tries the revised approach in a new situation
  3. CAbstract conceptualisation, where the trainee draws theories from the review

Explanation

The role-play is the concrete experience. Kolb's cycle then moves to reflective observation, followed by abstract conceptualisation and then active experimentation. Abstract conceptualisation cannot come before reflection, and active experimentation is the final stage, so both are wrong as the immediate next step.
