Ravi promises to pay Sunil ₹1,00,000 if Sunil marries Ravi's daughter Meera. Unknown to both, Meera had died before the agreement was made. What is the legal effect?

The agreement is void. Marriage to a daughter who was already dead is an impossible event, and Section 36 applies even when the parties do not know of the impossibility. Their ignorance of her death does not make the agreement enforceable.

  1. AEnforceable, because the parties were unaware of her death
  2. BVoid, because the event was impossible when the agreement was madeCorrect
  3. CEnforceable after one year
  4. DVoidable at Sunil's option

Explanation

This mirrors the illustration to Section 36. Since Meera was already dead, the marriage was impossible at the time of agreement. Section 36 makes the agreement void even though neither party knew. Ignorance does not save it, so the first option is wrong.
