The marks of 10 students have a range of 40 and the smallest mark is 20. If every mark is increased by 10% and then 5 marks are added, what is the new range?
The new range is 44. A 10% increase multiplies every mark by 1.1, so the range becomes 40 × 1.1 = 44. Adding 5 marks to each student shifts all values equally and does not change the range.
- A44Correct
- B49
- C40
- D45
Explanation
Range is unaffected by adding a constant but scales with multiplication. Multiplying by 1.10 gives range 40 × 1.10 = 44. Adding 5 to every mark leaves the range unchanged at 44. Option B (49) wrongly adds 5 to the range.
Did you get it right without looking?
One question tells you little. A timed set on Measures of Central Tendency and Dispersion shows your real accuracy, how long you take and where you lose marks.
