The marks of 40 students are grouped into classes 0–10, 10–20, 20–30, 30–40 and 40–50 with frequencies 4, 9, 14, 8 and 5 respectively. What is the 'less than' cumulative frequency corresponding to the upper limit 30?

The less than cumulative frequency at 30 is 27. It is found by adding the frequencies of all classes whose upper limit is up to 30, namely 4, 9 and 14. Using only the 20–30 class frequency or a higher limit gives wrong values.

  1. A14
  2. B27Correct
  3. C35
  4. D23

Explanation

The 'less than 30' cumulative frequency adds all classes up to 20–30: 4 + 9 + 14 = 27. Option 14 is only the frequency of the 20–30 class. Option 35 is the 'more than 20' count... actually 14+8+5 = 27 for more than 20, and 35 is the 'less than 40' count (4+9+14+8), so it uses the wrong limit.
