The monthly sales (in ₹ thousand) of a Pune retailer for nine months are 42, 35, 50, 28, 46, 39, 55, 31 and 44. What is the median monthly sales?

The median is 42 thousand rupees. After arranging the nine values in ascending order, the middle item is the fifth one, which is 42. Since the number of observations is odd, no averaging is needed, and the median is simply that central value.

  1. A39
  2. B42Correct
  3. C44
  4. D40

Explanation

Arrange in order: 28, 31, 35, 39, 42, 44, 46, 50, 55. With n = 9, the median is the (9+1)/2 = 5th value, which is 42. Choosing 39 would come from picking the 4th value, and 44 from the 6th.
