The ratio of two numbers is 5:3. If 4 is added to each, the ratio becomes 3:2. What is the sum of the original numbers?

The sum of the original numbers is 32. Taking the numbers as 5k and 3k and adding 4 to each gives 10k + 8 = 9k + 12, so k = 4. The numbers are 20 and 12, and 24:16 does equal 3:2.

  2. B24
  3. C32Correct
  4. D40

Explanation

Let numbers be 5k and 3k. (5k+4)/(3k+4) = 3/2 gives 10k+8 = 9k+12, so k = 4. Numbers are 20 and 12, sum 32. Check: 24:16 = 3:2. Option 24 comes from taking k = 3.
