Two runners, Meera and Kavya, start together from the same point on a circular track of length 600 m and run in the same direction at 5 m/s and 3 m/s respectively. After how many seconds will they meet again for the first time at the starting point's lap-gap, that is, when Meera has gained exactly one full lap on Kavya?

They meet after 300 seconds. Running in the same direction, the relative speed is 5 minus 3, which equals 2 metres per second. Meera must gain one full track length of 600 m, so the time is 600 divided by 2, giving 300 seconds.

  1. A200 seconds
  2. B300 secondsCorrect
  3. C150 seconds
  4. D75 seconds

Explanation

Relative speed in the same direction = 5 - 3 = 2 m/s. To gain one full lap, Meera must gain 600 m, so time = 600/2 = 300 seconds. Using the sum of speeds (8 m/s) gives 75 seconds, which applies only to opposite directions.
