Under the CGST Act, 2017, where must a registered person keep and maintain the true and correct accounts of production, supplies, stock, input tax credit and output tax, when the registration certificate shows only one place of business?

The accounts must be kept at the principal place of business as mentioned in the certificate of registration. The Act fixes this location so the officer can inspect the records there. Where there are additional places of business, accounts for each go to that place.

  1. AAt the principal place of business mentioned in the certificate of registrationCorrect
  2. BAt the residence of the proprietor or any partner
  3. CAt the office of the jurisdictional proper officer
  4. DAt the premises of the person's chartered accountant

Explanation

Section 35(1) requires every registered person to keep the accounts at the principal place of business as mentioned in the certificate of registration. Keeping them at the residence, the tax office or the accountant's premises is not the statutory place, so those options are wrong.
