CS Executive · Tax Laws and Practice · Income under the Head House Property
Under the Income-tax Act, 2025 (applicable from the June 2027 session), a loss under the head 'Income from house property' for a tax year is first set off against income under other heads. What is the maximum extent of this inter-head set off?
The maximum inter-head set off of house property loss is Rs. 2,00,000 for a tax year. Any loss beyond this limit cannot be adjusted against other heads and is carried forward to later tax years for set off against house property income.
- ARs. 1,00,000
- BRs. 2,00,000Correct
- CRs. 3,00,000
- DThe entire loss, without any limit
Explanation
Section 109 allows a house property loss to be set off against income under any other head only to the extent of Rs. 2,00,000. The balance is carried forward under section 110. Unlimited set off is not available, so the last option is wrong.
