Using A=1, B=2, ... Z=26, the sum of letter values is computed for each word. Three words have sums that are multiples of 5 and one does not. Which is the odd one out: BADE, CAGE, FACE, HEAD?

FACE is the odd one out. Its letter values add to 15, which is odd, while BADE gives 12, CAGE gives 16 and HEAD gives 18, all even. The shared property of the other three is an even letter sum.

  1. ABADE
  2. BCAGE
  3. CFACECorrect
  4. DHEAD

Explanation

BADE = 2+1+4+5 = 12. CAGE = 3+1+7+5 = 16. FACE = 6+1+3+5 = 15. HEAD = 8+5+1+4 = 18. None of these are all multiples of 5, so use a different common property: sums 12, 16, 18 are even while FACE = 15 is odd. Thus FACE is the odd one out.
