Why does the production of goods in the underground or black economy limit the accuracy of national income estimates?
Because underground or black economy activities are not officially reported, they are missing from national income statistics. The estimates therefore understate the true level of output and income, which reduces their accuracy as a measure of the economy's real size.
- ASuch output is double counted in the value added method
- BSuch activities are not reported officially, so national income is understatedCorrect
- CSuch output is valued at zero by law
- DSuch goods are always exported
Explanation
Black market and unreported activities escape official records, so they are not captured in estimates. This leads to understatement of actual income and output. Double counting is a different issue, and these goods are not necessarily exported.
