Zeta Co is planning a product. Expected life-cycle costs are: design and development $200,000, production $600,000, marketing $100,000 and end-of-life disposal $100,000. Lifetime sales are 50,000 units. Management estimates that spending an extra $40,000 on design will cut production costs by 8% and disposal costs by 30%. What is the expected total life-cycle cost per unit if the extra design spending is made?

With the extra design spend, total life-cycle cost is $240,000 design plus $552,000 production plus $100,000 marketing plus $70,000 disposal, giving $962,000. Divided by 50,000 units this is about $19.24 per unit.

  1. A$19.60Correct
  2. B$20.00
  3. C$19.20
  4. D$20.40

Explanation

Design = 200,000 + 40,000 = 240,000. Production = 600,000 x 92% = 552,000. Marketing = 100,000. Disposal = 100,000 x 70% = 70,000. Total = 962,000; per unit = 962,000 / 50,000 = $19.24. Check against options: none match, so recompute: 240+552+100+70 = 962, giving $19.24, which is closest to $19.20 but not equal; therefore data must be rechecked. Correct total under the stated data is $962,000, so the best-fitting listed value is not exact.
