To pass a group, a candidate needs at least 40% in each paper and 50% in aggregate of the non-exempted papers of that group. Intermediate is passed when both groups are passed.
- Pass in a group: minimum 40% in each paper of the group and 50% aggregate of the non-exempted papers of that group.
- A candidate appearing for both groups together qualifies with at least 40% in each paper and 50% aggregate taking both groups together.
- Exemption: a candidate who fails a group but scores 60% or more in a paper is exempted from that paper in later attempts; the paper is counted as 50 marks when calculating the group aggregate.
- Carry forward: if the candidate scores 60% or more in a paper and at least 40% in each other paper of the group, the actual marks of that paper are carried forward instead.
- Exemption or carry forward lasts for the next three successive exam terms, and is cancelled automatically if the candidate sits that paper again.
- Paper exemptions are also available on application and fee for some qualifications: Paper 7 and Paper 10 for qualified Company Secretaries (Rs 1,000 per paper), Paper 5 for LLB holders and Paper 9 for engineers (Rs 3,000 per paper).
- Successful Intermediate candidates receive a pass certificate; a certificate of merit goes to those who pass all papers at one sitting without any exemption.
- Verification of answer papers costs Rs 250 per paper (apply within 30 days of the result); there is no revaluation.
