Ind AS 8 Accounting Policies, Changes in Accounting Estimates and Errors: CA Final Study Guide

Ind AS 8 tells you how to choose accounting policies, and how to treat a change in policy, a change in estimate and a prior period error. Policy changes and errors are applied retrospectively. Estimate changes are applied prospectively. Identify which of the three you face, then apply the matching treatment.

What this chapter covers

Ind AS 8 deals with three situations that change reported numbers after the original accounting: you change an accounting policy, you revise an estimate, or you find an error from an earlier period. Each has its own treatment, and the whole chapter is about telling them apart and applying the right one.

The chapter also covers how an entity selects a policy in the first place. You first look for an Ind AS that specifically applies to the transaction. If none applies, management uses judgement, looking at Ind AS dealing with similar issues, the Conceptual Framework definitions and recognition criteria, and other bodies' pronouncements to the extent consistent with these.

This chapter links to almost every other standard in the paper. A change in depreciation method (Ind AS 16), an inventory cost formula (Ind AS 2), a provision revision (Ind AS 37) or a missed liability all end up here. It also links to Ind AS 1 for presentation of the balance sheet and restated comparatives, and to Ind AS 34 and Ind AS 33 where corrected figures flow through. Case scenarios often hide an Ind AS 8 question inside a question on another standard.

The chapter is short, conceptual and highly testable, so it gives good marks for modest effort. Examiners love scenarios where you must classify an event first and then compute the effect, often with restated opening balances or a revised depreciation charge. It also suits the case-scenario MCQ format, because one wrong classification changes the whole answer. Because it feeds other standards, a clear grip here prevents lost marks elsewhere.

Ind AS 8 Accounting Policies, Changes in Accounting Estimates and Errors: topics in the order to study them

  1. 1Selection and Application of Accounting PoliciesStart here because it defines what an accounting policy is and the hierarchy for choosing one, which you need to judge whether a later event is a policy change.
  2. 2Changes in Accounting PoliciesStudy this next because it builds directly on policy definitions and introduces retrospective application, the core mechanism you reuse for errors.
  3. 3Changes in Accounting EstimatesLearn it after policies so you can contrast prospective treatment with retrospective, and handle the tricky case where policy and estimate are hard to separate.
  4. 4Prior Period Errors and Their CorrectionTake errors once you know retrospective restatement, since the correction method mirrors a policy change but the reasons differ.
  5. 5DisclosuresFinish with the disclosure requirements for each of the three situations, which are easiest to remember once the three treatments are firm. Ind AS 8 is substantially aligned with IAS 8, so you do not need to learn a separate set of differences unless your ICAI study material points to one.
