NISM Series V-A Mutual Fund Distributors Exam Guide

NISM-Series-V-A is the computer-based multiple choice exam for people who want to sell or advise on mutual funds in India. It has 100 questions, 100 marks and 2 hours. You need 50% to pass, and there is no negative marking. Prepare by learning rules, definitions, NAV and tax calculations.

NISM-Series-V-A tests whether you know how mutual funds work and how to distribute them in line with SEBI and AMFI rules. It covers the investment landscape, fund structure, regulation, scheme types, distribution practices, NAV and expenses, taxation, investor services, and risk, return and scheme selection. You will meet both plain recall questions and short calculations.

The exam has 100 questions, 100 marks and a 2-hour limit. The pass mark is 50%. There is no negative marking, so a wrong answer costs you nothing more than a blank. Never leave a question unanswered.

Most students find the content familiar but the detail tricky. Scores drop mainly on exact rules, such as who can do what, which document is needed, and how a charge or tax is computed. Questions often use similar-looking options, so a rough idea is not enough. Students who practise calculations and revise regulations repeatedly tend to clear it comfortably. Students who only read once tend to struggle with the close options.

Each NISM exam is separate and computer-based. You book a test centre, date and time slot. The certificate is valid for 3 years from the date of the exam, so plan to renew before it lapses.

How to prepare NISM-Series-V-A: Mutual Fund Distributors

Plan for steady study over a few weeks rather than one long cram. The aim is to know the rules exactly and to be quick on calculations. Use this sequence.

  1. Read the list of chapters once and note which are rule-heavy (Legal Structure, Legal and Regulatory Framework, Scheme Related Information, Fund Distribution) and which are calculation-heavy (NAV and Expenses, Taxation, Risk and Return, Performance).
  2. Start with the Investment Landscape and Concept and Role of a Mutual Fund chapters. They give you the vocabulary that every later chapter uses. Make a short glossary of terms such as NAV, load, SIP, AUM and expense ratio.
  3. Study the legal structure and regulatory chapters slowly. Write the parties (sponsor, trustees, AMC, custodian, registrar) and what each one does. Learn the exact conditions and limits as given in the NISM workbook. Do not guess numbers.
  4. Go through scheme types by category: equity, debt, hybrid, solution-oriented and others. For each, note the purpose, the typical risk and the investor it suits. This is the base for scheme selection questions.
  5. Practise the NAV, expense ratio, returns and tax chapters with pen and paper. Redo each worked example without looking at the solution. Write the formula first, then substitute figures, then check the units.
  6. Cover distribution practices, investor services and scheme selection together. Think of a client situation and ask what you would recommend and which rule or process applies. This turns facts into answers.
  7. Take chapter-wise MCQ tests after each chapter, then at least three full 100-question mock tests in 2 hours. Keep an error log with the rule you missed and why.
  8. In the last week, revise only your error log, the glossary and the formulas. Rest properly the night before the exam.

Time management in the exam

  • You have 2 hours for 100 questions, which is about 72 seconds per question. Aim to finish a first pass in about 90 minutes.
  • Answer easy recall questions fast. Save the time you gain for calculation questions.
  • Because there is no negative marking, answer every question. If you are unsure, remove options you know are wrong and pick the best one.
  • Mark doubtful questions for review and move on. Do not spend more than two minutes on any one question during the first pass.
  • For calculations, use the rough work sheet and write each step. Check the final figure against the options before you select.
  • Keep the last 15 to 20 minutes for the review of marked questions and to confirm that no question is blank.

Mistakes that cost marks in NISM-Series-V-A: Mutual Fund Distributors

  • Treating the exam as general finance knowledge

Fix: Answer from the NISM workbook and SEBI and AMFI rules. When practice and the workbook differ, follow the workbook.

  • Skipping calculation practice

Fix: Solve NAV, expense, return and tax problems by hand several times until the steps are automatic.

  • Mixing up similar terms

Fix: Build a comparison list of confusing pairs and revise it often. Write one line on how they differ.

  • Memorising limits and timelines without understanding the reason

Fix: Link each limit to the purpose of the rule, such as investor protection or disclosure. Then recheck the exact figure in the workbook.

  • Leaving questions blank

Fix: This paper has no negative marking. Answer every question, using elimination when unsure.

  • Doing only one or two mock tests

Fix: Take several timed mocks. Review every wrong answer and note the exact rule so the same trap does not catch you again.
