A company has a list of 2,000 customer accounts, numbered 0001 to 2000. The auditor uses a random number generator to select 100 account numbers, so that every account has the same chance of being chosen. Which sampling method is this?
This is simple random sampling, because every account on the complete list has an equal chance of selection through random number generation. No grouping of the population into strata or clusters is involved, and the selection is not left to the judgement of the person choosing items.
- ASimple random samplingCorrect
- BStratified sampling
- CQuota sampling
- DCluster sampling
Explanation
Selecting items from a complete list using random numbers, with each item having an equal chance of selection, is simple random sampling. Stratified sampling would require dividing the population into groups first. Quota sampling is non-random and based on interviewer choice.
