A retailer has 5,000 sales records: 3,000 from Store A, 1,500 from Store B and 500 from Store C. A proportionate stratified random sample of 200 records is to be drawn, with stores as strata. How many records should be taken from Store B?

Store B should contribute 60 records. It represents 1,500 of 5,000 records, which is 30%, and applying 30% to the total sample of 200 gives 60. Proportionate stratified sampling keeps each stratum's share of the sample equal to its share of the population.

  1. A60Correct
  2. B67
  3. C100
  4. D40

Explanation

Store B is 1,500/5,000 = 30% of the population. 30% x 200 = 60 records. Taking an equal share (about 67) ignores proportionality and is wrong.
