A company secretary is asked why a laptop connected to an office Wi-Fi network is able to receive a different IP address each time it reconnects, without anyone configuring it manually. Which network service is mainly responsible for this automatic assignment?

DHCP is responsible. It automatically leases an IP address, subnet mask, gateway and DNS server details to a device when it joins a network. DNS translates domain names, ARP maps IP to MAC addresses, and FTP moves files, so they do not allocate addresses.

  1. ADNS, which converts domain names into IP addresses
  2. BDHCP, which leases IP addresses and related settings to devices automaticallyCorrect
  3. CARP, which maps an IP address to a hardware address
  4. DFTP, which transfers files between hosts

Explanation

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol assigns IP addresses, subnet mask, gateway and DNS details to devices from a pool for a lease period. DNS only resolves names to addresses, ARP resolves IP to MAC addresses on a local network, and FTP is for file transfer, so none of these assign addresses.
