A party wishes to give secondary evidence of a public document under section 60(e) of the Adhiniyam. Which kind of secondary evidence is admissible?

Only a certified copy is admissible. For a public document under section 60(e), the Explanation says a certified copy of the document, but no other kind of secondary evidence, is admissible, unlike clauses (a), (c) and (d), where any secondary evidence of contents is allowed.

  1. AA certified copy of the document, but no other kind of secondary evidenceCorrect
  2. BAny secondary evidence of its contents
  3. CAn oral account from any person who has read it
  4. DA summary prepared by the party's advocate

Explanation

Under the Explanation to section 60, for clause (e) or (f) a certified copy of the document, but no other kind of secondary evidence, is admissible. The 'any secondary evidence' rule applies only to clauses (a), (c) and (d), so the broader options are wrong.
