A report lists all works the author read while preparing it, including some books never cited in the text, arranged alphabetically at the end. A second list gives only the works actually cited in the text. Which pairing of terms is correct?

The first list is a bibliography and the second is a reference list. A bibliography includes every work consulted, even if not cited, while a reference list contains only those sources actually cited in the text. Glossaries, indexes and appendices serve other functions in a report.

  1. AFirst list is a bibliography; second list is a reference listCorrect
  2. BFirst list is a reference list; second list is a bibliography
  3. CBoth lists are called appendices
  4. DFirst list is a glossary; second list is an index

Explanation

A bibliography covers all works consulted, whether or not cited. A reference list contains only the sources actually cited in the text. Reversing them is the key error, and glossary, index and appendix are different report parts.
