For a distribution of daily sales, the first quartile is ₹24 thousand and the third quartile is ₹36 thousand. What is the coefficient of quartile deviation?

The coefficient of quartile deviation is 0.20. It is the relative measure (Q3 − Q1)/(Q3 + Q1) = 12/60. The figure 6 is only the absolute quartile deviation, and dividing the difference by Q1 or Q3 alone is a common mistake.

  1. A0.20Correct
  2. B0.33
  3. C0.50
  4. D6.00

Explanation

Coefficient of quartile deviation = (Q3 − Q1)/(Q3 + Q1) = (36 − 24)/(36 + 24) = 12/60 = 0.20. The value 6 is the quartile deviation itself, an absolute measure. The values 0.50 and 0.33 come from wrongly dividing by Q1 or Q3 alone.
