In a code, 'A # B' means 'A is the mother of B', 'A $ B' means 'A is the brother of B', 'A @ B' means 'A is the husband of B', and 'A & B' means 'A is the daughter of B'. In the expression P # Q $ R @ S & T, how is P related to S?

P is the mother-in-law of S. P is the mother of Q, and Q's brother R is S's husband, so P is also R's mother. The mother of one's husband is a mother-in-law.

  2. BAunt
  3. CMother
  4. DSister-in-law

Explanation

P # Q means P is the mother of Q. Q $ R means Q is the brother of R, so P is also R's mother. R @ S means R is the husband of S, so S is R's wife. P is therefore the mother of S's husband, i.e. her mother-in-law. S & T only gives S's own parent, T, and does not change this.
