In a distribution of 60 observations, the median class is 20-30 with frequency 18, and the cumulative frequency of the class preceding it is 20. What is the median?

Half of 60 is 30. The median class is 20-30, the preceding cumulative frequency is 20 and the class frequency is 18. Median = 20 + (10/18) x 10 = 25.56.

  1. A25.56Correct
  2. B28.89
  3. C30.00
  4. D26.67

Explanation

N/2 = 30. Median = 20 + ((30-20)/18) x 10 = 20 + 5.56 = 25.56. A common mistake is using the cumulative frequency of the median class itself (38) instead of the preceding one.
