Ishita walks 16 m south from her gate, then 12 m east, then 8 m north, and then turns west and walks 12 m to stop at point Q. How far is Q from the gate and in which direction?

Q is 8 m south of the gate. The southward 16 m is partly offset by the 8 m northward walk, leaving 8 m south, while the 12 m east and 12 m west legs cancel completely, so there is no sideways displacement.

  1. A8 m southCorrect
  2. B8 m north
  3. C20 m south-east
  4. D12 m south

Explanation

Net north-south: 16 m south minus 8 m north gives 8 m south. Net east-west: 12 m east minus 12 m west gives 0. So Q is 8 m directly south of the gate. Saying 12 m south would ignore the 8 m northward leg, and 8 m north would reverse the net direction.
