Rohan Metals Pvt Ltd in Pune pays its workers on a weekly basis. The weekly holiday falls on Sunday, and the last working day of the week is Saturday. Under the Code on Wages, 2019, by when must the weekly wages be paid?
Weekly-paid employees must receive wages on the last working day of the week, i.e. before the weekly holiday. Here that is Saturday, before the Sunday holiday. The second-day limit is for fortnightly wages and the seventh-day limit is for monthly wages.
- AOn the last working day of the week, before the weekly holidayCorrect
- BOn the first working day of the following week
- CBefore the end of the second day after the end of the week
- DBefore the expiry of the seventh day of the succeeding week
Explanation
For employees engaged on a weekly basis, wages must be paid on the last working day of the week, that is, before the weekly holiday. The second-day rule applies to fortnightly wages, so that option is wrong. The seventh-day rule applies to monthly wages.
