The marks of 40 students in a test were grouped into classes 0-10, 10-20, 20-30, 30-40 and 40-50 using the exclusive method. A student who scored exactly 30 marks is placed in which class?

The student is placed in the 30-40 class. In the exclusive method, the upper class limit is excluded and the lower limit is included, so a score of exactly 30 belongs to the class that begins at 30, not the class that ends at 30.

  1. A20-30
  2. B30-40Correct
  3. CBoth 20-30 and 30-40
  4. D40-50

Explanation

In the exclusive method the upper limit of a class is excluded from that class. So 30 is not counted in 20-30 and goes into 30-40, where it is the lower limit and is included.
