The monthly overtime hours of five workers at a Chennai plant are 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14. What is the mean deviation about the mean?

The mean deviation about the mean is 2.4. The mean of the hours is 10, the absolute deviations from it are 4, 2, 0, 2 and 4, which sum to 12, and dividing by five workers gives 2.4.

  1. A2.4Correct
  2. B2.0
  3. C3.0
  4. D2.8

Explanation

Mean = 50/5 = 10. Absolute deviations are 4, 2, 0, 2, 4, totalling 12. Mean deviation = 12/5 = 2.4. The value 2.8 would result from wrongly using n = 5 with a sum of 14, and is not supported by the data.
