Under Article 1 of the Constitution of India, how is India described?
India is described in Article 1 as a Union of States. The term 'Union' was chosen deliberately because the federation is not the result of an agreement between states and no state can secede from it.
- AA Federation of States
- BA Union of StatesCorrect
- CA Confederation of Provinces
- DA Union of Provinces and Princely States
Explanation
Article 1(1) declares that India, that is Bharat, shall be a Union of States. Dr. Ambedkar explained that the word 'Union' was chosen because the Indian federation is not the result of an agreement among states and no state has the right to secede. 'Federation of States' is therefore not the constitutional wording.
