Which of the following errors would NOT be revealed by extracting a trial balance?
An invoice posted to the wrong customer account is an error of commission, so the debit and credit amounts are still equal and the trial balance balances. The other errors involve one-sided entries or different amounts, which create a difference that a trial balance reveals.
- AA purchase of $500 was debited to purchases and credited to the supplier's account as $50
- BA sales invoice was posted to the wrong customer's accountCorrect
- CThe bank account was debited with a receipt of $300 but no credit entry was made
- DRent paid of $200 was debited to the rent account only
Explanation
Posting an invoice to the wrong customer account keeps debits equal to credits, so the trial balance still balances. The other options each leave only one side of the entry or unequal amounts, so debits and credits differ.
