Who summons and prorogues each House of Parliament, and what is the maximum gap between two sessions of Parliament?

The President summons and prorogues each House of Parliament, acting on ministerial advice. The Constitution says six months must not pass between the last sitting of one session and the first sitting of the next, so Parliament must meet at least twice a year.

  1. AThe President; not more than six months between the last sitting of one session and the first sitting of the nextCorrect
  2. BThe Speaker; not more than three months
  3. CThe Prime Minister; not more than one year
  4. DThe Vice-President; not more than nine months

Explanation

Under Article 85, the President summons each House to meet and prorogues it, acting on the advice of the Council of Ministers. The Constitution requires that six months must not intervene between the last sitting in one session and the first sitting in the next session. The other options give the wrong authority or the wrong interval.
