NISM certificates are the knowledge benchmark SEBI requires for people working in specific roles at securities market intermediaries. Each module maps to a defined job function, so the right module depends on the role.

Typical roles

  • Mutual fund distributor, agent or sales staff, including AMC employees involved in mutual fund sales (V-A)
  • Depository participant staff handling clients, client securities, grievances, risk or records (VI)
  • Operations, risk management and investor grievance staff at stock brokers, trading members and clearing members (VII)
  • Approved users and sales personnel in equity derivatives at trading members (VIII)
  • SEBI-registered investment adviser, principal officer of an investment adviser firm, or person associated with investment advice (X-A and X-B)
  • Research analyst preparing or publishing research reports, or a partner or employee in a research analyst firm (XV)
  • Distributor of portfolio management services (XXI-A)

Where you can work

  • Mutual fund distribution and asset management companies
  • Stock brokers, trading members and clearing members
  • Depository participants
  • Investment advisory firms
  • Research analyst firms
  • Portfolio managers and their distributors

What it leads to: Passing the relevant module meets the NISM certification requirement for that role under SEBI rules; the certificate must then be renewed every 3 years through re-examination, CPE or eCPE, or the X-C and XV-B renewal examinations where they apply. Investment advisers need both X-A and X-B.
