A firm's monthly sales to purchases are in the ratio 7:5. If sales for a month are ₹4,90,000, what is the amount of purchases?

Purchases are ₹3,50,000. Sales represent 7 parts, so each part is ₹70,000. Purchases are 5 parts, which is ₹3,50,000. Multiplying sales by 7/5 would invert the ratio and wrongly give a higher purchase figure.

  1. A₹3,50,000Correct
  2. B₹3,43,000
  3. C₹6,86,000
  4. D₹4,20,000

Explanation

Sales are 7 parts, so one part = 4,90,000/7 = ₹70,000. Purchases are 5 parts = 5 × 70,000 = ₹3,50,000. Check: 4,90,000:3,50,000 = 7:5. Option ₹6,86,000 arises from multiplying sales by 7/5 (inverting the ratio).
