A production supervisor records the number of defective units found in five batches: 12, 15, 9, 20 and 14. What is the range of this data set?
The range is 11 defective units. It is found by subtracting the lowest observation (9) from the highest observation (20). The range measures only the total spread between the extremes and ignores all the values in between.
- A11Correct
- B14
- C29
- D5.5
Explanation
The range is the highest value minus the lowest value: 20 - 9 = 11. Adding the highest and lowest (29) is a common error. 14 is the median, which is a measure of location and not of spread.

One question tells you little. A timed set on Summarising and analysing data shows your real accuracy, how long you take and where you lose marks.
