Data on 40 shops are classified by region (North, South) and by size (Small, Large). There are 22 shops in North, 18 in South, and 15 Large shops overall. If 9 Large shops are in North, how many Small shops are in South?

There are 12 Small shops in South. Large shops in South are 15 − 9 = 6, so Small shops in South are 18 − 6 = 12. This agrees with the total of 25 Small shops, since North has 13 and South 12.

  1. A12Correct
  2. B6
  3. C9
  4. D13

Explanation

Large in South = 15 − 9 = 6. Small in South = South total − Large in South = 18 − 6 = 12. Check: Small in North = 22 − 9 = 13, and 13 + 12 = 25 = 40 − 15. Option 6 is the Large shops in South, and 13 is Small in North.
