In a 1000 m race, Rohit beats Suresh by 100 m. In a 1000 m race, Suresh beats Tarun by 200 m. By how many metres does Rohit beat Tarun in a 1000 m race?

Rohit beats Tarun by 280 m. While Rohit covers 1000 m, Suresh covers 900 m, and Tarun covers 800/1000 of Suresh's distance, which is 720 m. The margin is 1000 minus 720, equal to 280 m, not the simple sum of 300 m.

  1. A300 m
  2. B280 mCorrect
  3. C290 m
  4. D270 m

Explanation

When Rohit runs 1000 m, Suresh runs 900 m. When Suresh runs 1000 m, Tarun runs 800 m. So when Suresh runs 900 m, Tarun runs 900 x 800/1000 = 720 m. Thus Rohit beats Tarun by 1000 - 720 = 280 m. Simply adding 100 + 200 = 300 m is wrong because the 200 m margin applies to Suresh's 1000 m, not 900 m.
